President
George Washington
George Washington was Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and as one of our nation’s Founding Fathers presided over the convention that drafted the United States Constitution and remains the Supreme law of the land. As our first President, who was elected twice by unanimous consent, he set the president that established the framework of our democratic republic. He believed strongly in the three separate but equal branches of government and the checks and balances provided. In his Farewell Address he gave advise regarding the necessity and importance of National Union, the value of the Constitution and rule of law, the evils of political parties and the proper virtue of a Republican people. He called Morality “a necessary spring of popular government”. Among other things he warned against bitter partisanship in domestic politics and called for men to move beyond partisanship and serve the common good. With the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, Washington’s Farewell address constitutes the central statement of the American purpose. This outstanding bronze bust of George Washington is a reminder of how indispensable he was during the creation and formation of our way of government. He was truly a leader in a class by himself.
